Water has been one of the most defining and contentious environmental issues in New Zealand over the last decade. It is good to see the Government taking action in this area.
Fresh water lies at the heart of our natural environment. Our clean green image is inseparable from clear-running mountain streams and rain-soaked bush. The same water also fuels two engines of our economy – agriculture and electricity. Managing fresh water inevitably involves managing the tensions between environmental protection and economic development.
